Pienza was rebuilt from the village of Corsignano and is the birthplace of Enea Silvio Piccolomini, a Renaissance humanist born into an exiled Sienese family, who later became Pope Pius II. Once he was elevated to Pope, over the years Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town. Pienza is known as the “ideal city” or the “utopian city” and is the touchstone of Renaissance urbanism representing the first application of humanist urban planning concepts. Spend the afternoon taking in the famous atmosphere by visiting the Piccolomini Gardens, the city’s Cathedral and the beautiful architecture of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
