Located at the mouth of the River Tiber, Ostia was said to have been founded by Ancus Marcius, the fourth king of Rome, in the 7th century BC. Ostia was first military colony of Rome and first river port in Italy. By the 2nd century AD, it had become a flourishing commercial center inhabited by upwards of 100,000 people, whose apartment buildings, taverns, and grocery shops are still intact. As we will walk along Ostia’s main street, the Decumanus Maximus, we will notice beneath our feet deep ruts left by carrucas, the four-wheeled carts used to ferry merchandise and baggage between Rome and Ostia. Once inside the Roman Gate, we will visit the Baths of Neptune to admire refined mosaics. We will climb fully preserved series of steep semicircular stone bleachers of Ostia’s amphitheatre. The amphitheatre was erected in 12 BC for 3500 spectators, however it’s still intact and used in summer time for theatrical performances and concerts.
